Our youngest daughter’s great-grandma recently bought her GUND’s Animated Elephant. Flappy! ‘Awesome… another f’n stuffed animal.’ But then we pressed the Sing button, and holy crap but is this thing adorable. I’ll let Flappy speak for itself here.
Over and over we played, “Do your ears hang low…” until it was burned in our heads. It’s a cute voice, and perfectly in sync with the motion. Even better, our 1-year-old absolutely loves Flappy. It’s very huggable, and though it might not have as much variety as the farting finger puppets, it’s still very entertaining.
A quick funny aside: when I was a kid, I had a GUND monkey, Mr. Monkey. When I was starting to read, I found the tag on Mr. Monkey and spelled out the brand, “GUND.” Putting two and two together, I realized that some company had found Mr. Monkey out in the while, shot and killed him, stuffed him with cotton, and tagged him as ‘gunned.’ I was pretty upset at the time. I’m sure my parents had a good laugh.
Anyway, Flappy’s lyrics themselves are a bit advanced for a kid. “Can your throw [your ears] o’er your shoulder / Like a continental soldier?” I mean, maybe by middle school that might make sense? The Continental Army was disbanded in 1783. Then again, understanding what the elephant is singing doesn’t matter when the thing is so damn cute. Somewhat amusingly, at least according to Wikipedia, the tune probably originated as a sanitized version of “Do your balls hang low?” and “Do your boobs hang low?”
Flappy’s Song, Do Your Ears Hang Low?
Do your ears hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Will you tie ’em in a knot?
Can you tie ’em in a bow?
Can you throw ’em o’er your shoulder
Like a continental soldier?
Do your ears hang low?
Do your ears flip-flop?
Can you use them as a mop?
Are they stringy at the bottom?
Are they curly at the top?
Can you use them for a swatter?
Can you use them for a blotter?
Do your ears flip-flop?
Do your ears stick out?
Can you waggle them about?
Can you flap them up and down
As you fly around the town?
Can you shut them up for sure
When you hear an awful bore?
Do your ears stick out?
